How Cumulative GPA is Calculated
Cumulative GPA (CGPA) is the weighted average of all your semester GPAs, taking into account the credit hours for each semester.
Formula
Where Σ (sigma) means "sum of" - you multiply each semester's GPA by its credits, add them all up, and divide by total credits.
Step-by-Step Example
Given:
- • Semester 1: GPA 3.5, Credits 15
- • Semester 2: GPA 3.8, Credits 16
- • Semester 3: GPA 3.6, Credits 15
Calculation:
Quality Points = (3.5 × 15) + (3.8 × 16) + (3.6 × 15)
Quality Points = 52.5 + 60.8 + 54.0 = 167.3
Total Credits = 15 + 16 + 15 = 46
CGPA = 167.3 ÷ 46 = 3.64
Important: CGPA gives more weight to semesters with higher credit hours. A semester with 20 credits will have more impact on your CGPA than a semester with 12 credits.
CGPA FAQs
What's the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is your average for a single semester, while CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average across all semesters of your academic program.
Why are credits important for CGPA?
Credits weight each semester's contribution to your CGPA. A semester with more credits has a bigger impact on your overall CGPA than a semester with fewer credits.
Can I improve my CGPA after a bad semester?
Yes! While it becomes harder as you progress, you can improve your CGPA by earning higher GPAs in subsequent semesters. The impact depends on how many credits you've already completed.
What is a good CGPA?
On a 4.0 scale, 3.5+ is excellent, 3.0-3.5 is good, and 2.5-3.0 is average. On a 10.0 scale, 8.5+ is excellent, 7.0-8.5 is good, and 6.0-7.0 is average.
Do all semesters count equally?
No, semesters are weighted by their credit hours. A semester with 18 credits will have more impact on your CGPA than a semester with 12 credits, even if the GPAs are the same.
